To raise public awareness of the 2021 Population Census and encourage the use of the online questionnaire, the Census and Statistics Department held a roving exhibition from May to July around Hong Kong. Please click the following pictures to view the content of panels:

 History of Hong Kong Population Censuses and By-censuses. It is an established practice in Hong Kong to conduct a population census every ten years and a population by-census in the middle of the intercensal period since 1961.
Population censuses and by-censuses are closely related to our daily live. Population censuses and by-censuses aims to obtain up-to-date benchmark information on socio-economic characteristics of population, and to provide quality statistics for population sub-groups and small geographical areas.
 The data topics for Population censuses and by-censuses progressing with the times, new data topics are added to meet the society’s latest needs, including elderly persons requiring care is added as the data topic for the 2021 Population Census.
The 2021 Population Census is conducted under the Census and Statistics (2021 Population Census) Order, All persons specified are obliged to provide the required information. Besides, information collected regarding individual persons and households will be kept in strict confidence and will not be disclosed to any unauthorised parties, including Government departments. Such information will only be used for compiling statistics but not for other purposes. And all completed questionnaires, in both paper and electronic forms, will be destroyed within 12 months after the commencement of the Census.
According to the chart on population pyramids in mid-2010 and mid-2020, it shows Hong Kong population has been ageing rapidly.
According to the chart on proportion of population with post-secondary education by sex and age group in 2006 and 2016, it shows educational attainment of Hong Kong people continued to improve.
According to the chart on proportion of population aged 5 and over by ability to read and write Chinese and English in 2016, it shows over 60% of Hong Kong people could read and write both Chinese and English.
According to the chart on proportion of population by District Council district in 2016, it shows the largest population in Sha Tin district, and the  smallest population in Islands district.
According to the table on working population with fixed place of work in Hong Kong in 2016, and the table on persons attending full-time courses in educational institutions in Hong Kong in 2016, it shows the significant proportion of population working and studying in another district.
According to the chart on working population with fixed place of work in Hong Kong by main mode of transport to place of work in 2006 and 2016, it shows MTR overtook buses as the most prevalent mode of transport to workplaces.
According to the chart on persons attending full-time courses in educational institutions in Hong Kong by main mode of transport to place of study in 2006 and 2016, it shows walking remained as the most popular way for full-time students to commute to school.
According to the chart on persons of non-Chinese ethnicities by ethnicity and place of birth in 2006 and 2016, it shows Hong Kong has been getting more ethnically diverse.
According to the chart on proportion of persons of non-Chinese ethnicities in selected District Council districts in 2006 and 2016, it shows the prominent rise in proportion of persons of non-Chinese ethnicities in different districts.
The 2021 Population Census adopts a multi-modal data collection approach. During the first phase starting on 23 June, households may choose to complete their questionnaires through online or telephone means. For those households receiving paper questionnaire, they may also complete and mail back the questionnaires to the Census and Statistics Department. During the second phase starting on 18 July, our census officers will visit those households not yet responded.
Your data will be kept in strict confidence. A multi-pronged approach is implemented to safeguard data confidentiality.
Advantages of using online questionnaire includes time saving and convenient, simple and easy, secure and improve data quality.
